Multilateral R&D alliances by new ventures

چکیده
Field Editor: D. Jennings We examine the antecedents and outcomes of new ventures' formation of multilateral R&D alliances. Our results show an inverted U-shaped relationship between market uncertainty and a new venture's likelihood of forming multilateral R&D alliances. Top management team's social capital and ventures' technological capabilities are critical for new ventures to identify and capture alliance opportunities. Moreover, our analysis reveals value creation effects of multilateral R&D alliances for new ventures despite the challenges and difficulties associated. We further show that the value creation effect is a function of the type of exchange relationship (i.e., netvs. chain-based) in the multilateral R&D alliance and that governance structure moderates this relationship. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. n research and development (R&D) alliances, the partner firms must balance the tension between knowledge sharing and knowledge leakages because knowledge sharing, designed to support the alliance's technology development goals, can often lead to unintended and potentially damaging knowledge leakages. Growth in the internationalization of R&D activity has increased in concert with the increasing use of strategic alliances. Typically, to date MNEs have preferred to internalize their R&D activities by setting up wholly owned subsidiaries or by acquiring a suitable target. By considering the sequential nature of market entry and the contingency for subsequent reorientation following an initial ...
متن کاملThe Transition from Alliance Networks to Multilateral Alliances in the Global Airline Industry
This study examines conditions in which alliance networks (informal webs of bilateral entanglements between firms) may or may not evolve into multilateral alliances (broad, formal multiple-firm arrangements). I offer a theory to explain the formation of multilateral alliances based on both the resource profile and the structure of existing interfirm networks, and provide an initial test of that...
متن کاملDo Firms Learn to Create Value? the Case of Alliances
We investigate whether firms learn to manage interfirm alliances as experience accumulates. We use contract-specific experience measures in a data set of over 2000 joint ventures and licensing agreements, and value creation measures derived from the abnormal stock returns surrounding alliance announcements. Learning effects are identified from the effects of unobserved heterogeneity in alliance...

This study examines how national culture influences the likelihood and rate of buyouts among R&D equity alliances and joint ventures in the biotechnology industry. We hypothesize that the interaction of specific national culture attributes and cultural differences between alliance partners bear upon: a) the amount of endogenous uncertainty surrounding the potential integration of the target fir...
